How to Choose the Right Commercial Freezer

The best commercial freezer is the one that fits how your kitchen really works. Start with 3 questions. What do you store, how often do you reach for it, and how much floor space can you spare? Your answers point to the right type, size and door style, so you buy once and buy well.

Pick the Right Type of Freezer

An upright commercial freezer is the easy choice for most cafés, restaurants and takeaways. Shelves keep stock sorted, you can grab items fast during service, and the tall shape saves floor space. A commercial chest freezer gives you the most storage for your money. It is great for cartons, meat and seafood, but items at the bottom take more effort to reach. An under bench freezer slides under your prep bench and keeps daily frozen items within arm’s reach. It holds less, so it works best as a helper to a larger freezer. A drawer freezer gives tidy, quick access at the cooking line. If customers need to see the product, choose a glass door display freezer or a gelato display freezer.

Choose the Right Size

Estimate the frozen stock you hold on your busiest week, then add about 20 per cent for growth. Think about delivery days as well. Weekly deliveries need more space than daily ones. Remember that the litres on a spec sheet are not the same as usable space, because shelf layout and door style change how much food really fits. As a rough guide, a small café often suits a single door freezer, while a busy restaurant, butcher or bakery may need a two door upright or a large chest freezer. Two smaller freezers can also be smarter than one big one, because you still have cold storage if one needs repair.

Check It Will Fit

Measure the spot, the doorways and the path from the delivery truck to your kitchen. Leave the gap the maker recommends around the sides and back so air can flow. A crowded freezer works harder and wears out sooner. Check that the doors can open fully, and confirm the power point type before you order.

Solid Door or Glass Door

Solid door freezers hold the cold well, so they suit back-of-house storage. Glass door freezers let you see stock without opening the door, which suits front-of-house and retail displays, though they usually use a little more power.

Think About Heat and Defrosting

Australian kitchens get hot. If your freezer will sit near fryers or ovens, or in a warm room, look for a model rated for high room temperatures, often called tropical or a higher climate class. Also compare defrost styles. Frost-free models save you cleaning time, while manual defrost models are simple and often cost less.

Commercial Freezer FAQs

What size commercial freezer does a small café need?
Most small cafés do well with a single door upright or a medium chest freezer. Count your weekly frozen stock, add about 20 per cent, and compare that with the usable litres, not just the headline figure.

Is a chest freezer or an upright freezer better for a restaurant?
Upright freezers suit restaurants that pick items often during service. Chest freezers suit bulk storage of slow-moving stock. Many kitchens use both.

What temperature should a commercial freezer be?
Frozen food should be held at -18°C or colder. Check the display and use a separate thermometer as part of your daily food safety checks.

How much does a commercial freezer cost in Australia?
Prices depend on size, brand and type. Under bench models can start under $1,000 ex GST, while large multi door and display freezers cost several thousand dollars. Check the current price on each product page.

Can I rent or finance a commercial freezer?
Yes. Many of our freezers show a weekly rental price, and we offer equipment finance. Call 1300 434 125 for help.

Do you deliver commercial freezers Australia wide?
Yes. We deliver across Sydney and Australia. Measure your doorways and delivery path first so the freezer arrives without any trouble.
